Hays Sales & Marketing are delighted to be working in partnership with the Scottish Grocers’ Federation. SGF is the only authoritative voice for the Scottish convenience store industry – an industry that provides over 47,000 jobs throughout just over 5,000 stores.

SGF strive to ensure the viability of their retailers’ businesses in whatever way they can. As well as working extremely closely with the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government to inform and influence key policy within the sector, SGF also aim to bring together retailers and suppliers in one united single body.

Due to an impending retirement, the organisation are looking for a driven individual to take responsibility for a portfolio of stores within their buying group, but also to develop the business, increasing the offer to other stores throughout Scotland. Your new role

Working closely with the Board of Management and reporting to the Chief Executive, you will lead the development of the company profile in the market. This will include; leading a company rebrand, increasing the profile of the organisation, and the development of the company website. You will lead and manage this process, using external marketing agency support on all technical elements.

You will be responsible for membership relations. This requires liaising with both retailers and suppliers to offer the best buying opportunities for their retail members; maintaining contacts and business relationships will be essential to this. In addition, you will manage membership development (increasing the number of retailers within the portfolio of stores) through proactive business development and face to face meetings with prospective retailers across Scotland. Due to the nature of the business, this position will require travel to retailers across Scotland, as well as the attendance at industry events.

Deep market knowledge is important to allow you to be in a position to provide advice and market-led information to retailers, ensuring all members are in receipt of updated information on changes which may affect their trading. You will lead negotiations with main current supplier to ensure the best possible deal is available for supply and delivery to buying group customers.

As a commercially astute leader and results-driven individual, you will have a responsibility to report and update to board level, as well as undertaking a number of tasks, including overseeing income and expenditure of the company. This will be based upon existing processes and systems in place.

What you’ll need to succeed

A background in sales and account management from the industry is essential. Ideally you will have worked within the convenience network, but if not, for a supplier or manufacturer to the trade, providing you will a level of knowledge around the industry and products.

You must be an excellent communicator, with a natural ability to build relationships, and a proven track record of maintaining and developing accounts. You will have the ability to analyse and understand gaps and trends to identify new business opportunities.

This opportunity is perfect for an individual with a positive and forward-thinking attitude. There is huge potential in this position to develop the company brand, market positioning, supplier relationships, and number of retailers within the portfolio. This will require strong planning, determination, pro-activity and a ‘can-do’ attitude.

What you’ll get in return

You will receive a highly competitive salary of £40,000 - £45,000.

In addition, you will be offered a company car / car allowance, 29 days annual leave, as well as an attractive bonus scheme

The position will require you be in commutable distance of the company HQ in Edinburgh; however you will have flexibility to also work from home
